DLA Piper welcomes new recruits in Yorkshire

Wednesday, October 6th, 2010

DLA PiperLaw firm DLA Piper has welcomed 21 new recruits to its Yorkshire offices this month, with the latest intake of trainee solicitors joining the international legal practice.

The new starters all hail from, or have studied in, the Yorkshire region and will now spend the next two years with DLA Piper in Leeds and Sheffield as part of their qualification as solicitors. Each trainee will spend six months in departments across the firm to ensure they have a broad legal knowledge, before deciding which area of commercial law they will specialise in as a career.

Over 1800 graduates apply for between 85 and 90 trainee contracts at DLA Piper each year. The two year programme is renowned as being one of the broadest training programmes for commercial law trainees and gives applicants the opportunity to gain a broad range of experience, working on high profile and complex matters in a wide range of UK locations.

Faith James, who was born in Wakefield and lived in Harrogate before studying at Cambridge University has started her traineeship in the Leeds Finance and Projects team. She comments; “When I was looking at training programmes, I wanted to find a firm with a strong  reputation in national and international work for high profile clients, so that I could gain the broadest exposure to different types of work. But, as I have strong ties to Yorkshire, I ideally wanted a firm with regional roots. DLA Piper fulfilled all these criteria so was top of my list!

“Even in the short time I have been with the firm, I can already see that I am going to have the opportunity to work on some really interesting projects and get a fantastic grounding for my future career.”

Steve Sly, Managing Partner at DLA Piper in Sheffield comments; “Recruiting and developing the legal ‘stars’ of the future is incredibly important to the DLA Piper teams in Sheffield and Leeds.

Piper’s tune carries across Three Peaks

Monday, July 19th, 2010

DLA PiperLawyers from DLA Piper in Leeds have completed the ‘Three Peaks Challenge’, raising over £4,300 for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

The team of over 20 lawyers from the Leeds office of the global law firm set out on the challenge earlier this month, facing the highs and lows of blistering heat and driving winds as they completed the 26 mile hike.

The walkers maintained a steady pace throughout the hike, which covers Yorkshire’s three highest peaks; Pen-y-ghent (2,277ft), , Whernside (2,415ft) and Ingleborough (2,375ft), and takes anything between 6 to 12 hours to complete.

The challenge is part of DLA Piper’s year-long campaign to raise funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care, which supports individuals and families living with cancer.

Brian Curran, Marie Curie’s  Regional Corporate Development Manager; “DLA Piper’s efforts in taking on this challenge will help the people who we look after, who are facing their own challenges of dealing with cancer.

“The funds raised by the Piper Hikers will help our nurses and Hospice staff continue to look after their patients in a very special way and will make a real difference to so many people.”

Mark Vipan, Partner at DLA Piper in Leeds and head of its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative adds; “Each year DLA Piper in Leeds selects a charity to support within the region, and this year we are proud to be working with Marie Curie Cancer Care.

“The money raised by the hikers will go a long way to ease the pain of any blisters from the walk, and means that we have now raised in excess of £21,000 for the charity so far this year.”

Moscow calls to young Leeds lawyer

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010
Rebecca Lightfoot of DLA Piper in Moscow

Leeds lawyer Rebecca Lightfoot of DLA Piper in Moscow

A trainee lawyer from the Leeds office of DLA Piper has travelled to Moscow to spend six months learning the ropes of the Russian legal system.

As her colleagues in Leeds enjoy the end of freezing temperatures and snow and look forward to Spring, Rebecca Lightfoot is facing treacherously icy conditions and two foot snow drifts on her daily commute to DLA Piper’s Moscow office, where she is working as part of the corporate law team.

She explains; “Russian law continues to evolve in the commercial market. As a result, the certainties offered in English law are attractive to many domestic and international players in the Russian market.

“There are also a lot of joint ventures in the Russia at the moment, so I am mainly working on contracts and shareholders’ agreements.”

Rebecca is spending six months in Moscow as part of her two year trainee contract at DLA Piper, which was established in Leeds over 200 years ago and now has 67 offices in 29 countries, and encourages its trainees to spend time working in different markets to help develop their legal expertise.

“I am still getting to grips with the technicalities of the Russian market, but it is really interesting to apply my knowledge of English law to such a different business culture, and develop a real understanding of how another economy works.

“For example, although most companies want to use English law and English language contracts for their business agreements, Russian remains the main business language for the majority of negotiations.  Therefore, a lot of time is spent translating contracts between English and Russian to ensure each party knows what they are agreeing to.

“Thankfully, I had Russian lessons before I left Leeds, and my supervising partner is fluent in English, Russian and French.  If a Yorkshire company were looking to invest in this market, it would definitely help to have a feel for the basics of the language first .”

DLA Piper’s Moscow office is one of the largest in the local legal market and works on many of the country’s energy, telecommunications, hospitality and infrastructure projects, often involving colleagues in the UK and the United States.  The Russian economy is the eighth largest globally, and UK exports into the country were worth £2.8 billion in 2008. The energy, advanced engineering and professional services markets are all strong areas of growth and Western goods and services continue to be in high demand.

The opportunity for Rebecca to work in Russia came as a result of the Leeds firm’s strong links with its Russian colleagues, explains partner Andrew Davies, who heads up the office’s Russian connection.

“One of the major benefits of being a global law firm is that we can provide a DLA Piper lawyer wherever a company wants to do business in the world. Opportunities in Central Eastern Europe and Russia are of great interest to a lot of UK businesses at the moment, so we need to know that market.

“We work closely with our colleagues in Russia on a daily basis.  Rebecca is a talented young lawyer, so we were able to secure this opportunity, which will not only benefit her career but also give her a greater understanding of the Russian market, which she will be able to use to the benefit of our clients.”

Rebecca concludes; “It’s an amazing opportunity to be able to work in another country, and because of DLA Piper’s presence in the market, I am working on some really interesting projects.

“I am learning new things that I will be able to use in advising clients when I return to the UK – about the law, the culture and language, and the fact that you really can operate a business as normal, even when the snow is two feet deep!”
